Parents to Change Nappies of Preschool Children

The decision of Blaenau Gwent Council in South Wales to enforce parents or carers of neurotypical children wearing nappies or pullups while attending nursery1 or reception2 is unsurprising.

It’s a known fact that children are wearing nappies longer than what they were 30 years ago. Back then, toilet learning was completed at 2 years of age, now it’s commonly at 3 years and sometimes 4 years.

I strongly believe that the more common and convenient use of disposable nappies is the reason for this. When I’ve proffered this opinion with others, the response has been mixed. Some agree with me. Some believe that families are busier these days with both parents working, however 30 years ago, it was quite common for both parents to be working (as I did so myself). We weren’t living in the 1950s!

Others think that toilet learning needs to be undertaken when the child is ready and this age can very. I agree with this to a certain extent, however I actually think its more about when the parent/carers are ready. In my experience, it only takes 2 weeks for neurotypical children to learn to use the toilet.

Toilet learning is a critical skill. Use of reusable nappies helps children understand the feeling of being wet (which they don’t like) and encourages them to recognise the sensation of needing to urinate. This is what facilitates successful toilet learning as it encourages a child to be ready for toilet learning.

If you want to reduce your environmental impact and reduce the number of disposable nappies you put into landfill, but you don’t want to do all the washing, have a look at our modern cloth nappy service.

We’re happy to do the hard work for you so you can get on with the important things.

1 Children in the UK attend nursery from the term after their 3rd birthday.
2 Children in the UK attend reception from 4 years of age, turning 5 that year.
